Education
Quality educational opportunities can be found in the Huntington region from kindergarten to high school to college and beyond.
The Cabell County Public School system has a proud tradition of professional employees. Reading, writing and arithmetic remain the foundation for learning. Computer instruction begins in kindergarten as technology is stressed throughout the learning process. Emphasis is also placed on workplace readiness.
In 1990, a bond for school construction was passed which brought about the consolidation of seven high schools into three: Cabell Midland High School, Huntington High School and Spring Valley High School. Now every student in the region attends a state-of-the-art high school. Alternative choices in private and parochial schooling can also be found in the region.
Upon graduating from high school, students have a number of local educational choices including studying at Marshall University, Marshall Community & Technical College, Huntington Junior College, Huntington School of Beauty Culture, or the Cabell County Career Technology Center.
Founded in 1837 as a small teacher’s college, Marshall University is now West Virginia’s fastest growing institution for higher learning with an enrollment in excess of 16,000. The 1990s brought sweeping changes on the campus not only in terms of academic excellence, but modern new facilities as well. In 1991, a new $30 million football stadium opened on campus. A year later, construction was completed on a new $13 million Fine and Performing Arts Center. In 1996, construction was completed on the Drinko Library, regarded as one of the country’s most modern, technologically advanced facilities.
